First-Order Classical Modal Logic
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper focuses on extending to the first order case the semantical program for modalities first introduced by Dana Scott and Richard Montague. We focus on the study of neighborhood frames with constant domains and we offer a series of new completeness results for salient classical systems of first order modal logic. Among other results we show that it is possible to prove strong completeness results for normal systems without the Barcan Formula (like FOL+K) in terms of neighborhood frames with constant domains. The first order models we present permit the study of many epistemic modalities recently proposed in computer science as well as the development of adequate models for monadic operators of high probability. Models of this type are either difficult of impossible to build in terms of relational Kripkean semantics. We conclude by introducing general first order neighborhood frames and we offer a general completeness result in terms of them which circumvents some well-known problems of propositional and first order neighborhood semantics (mainly the fact that many classical modal logics are incomplete with respect to an unmodified version of neighborhood frames). We argue that the semantical program that thus arises surpasses both in expressivity and adequacy the standard Kripkean approach, even when it comes to the study of first order normal systems.

Modal Logic and Model Theory
We propose a first order modal logic, the QS?E-logic, obtained by adding to the well-known first order modal logic QS4 a rigidity axiom sch?mas : A -> O A, where A denotes a basic formula. In this logic, the possibility entails the possibility of extending a given classical first order model. This allows us to express some impor? tant concepts of classical model theory, such as existential comp...
متن کاملA Van Benthem/Rosen theorem for coalgebraic predicate logic
Coalgebraic modal logic serves as a unifying framework to study a wide range of modal logics beyond the relational realm, including probabilistic and graded logics as well as conditional logics and logics based on neighbourhoods and games. Coalgebraic predicate logic (CPL), a generalization of a neighbourhoodbased first-order logic introduced by Chang, has been identified as a natural first-ord...
متن کاملEmbedding of Quantified Higher-Order Nominal Modal Logic into Classical Higher-Order Logic
In this paper, we present an embedding of higher-order nominal modal logic into classical higher-order logic and study its automation. There exists no automated theorem prover for first-order or higherorder nominal logic at the moment, hence, this is the first automation for this kind of logic. In our work, we focus on nominal tense logic and have successfully proven some first theorems.

We deene a class of modal logics LF by uniformly extending a class of modal logics L. Each logic L is characterised by a class of rst-order deenable frames, but the corresponding logic LF is sometimes characterised by classes of modal frames that are not rst-order deenable. The class LF includes provability logics with deep arithmeti-cal interpretations. Using Belnap's proof-theoretical framewo...
متن کاملLecture Notes on First-Order Reductions of First-Order Modal Logic 15-816: Modal Logic
First-order modal logic is clearly more than classical first-order logic, because modalities can be used to phrase more advanced necessity and possibility properties. At the same time, first-order modal logic and non-modal first-order logic are not entirely different either. Modalities quantify over all ( ) or some (♦) worlds. Quantifiers also quantify over all (∀) or some (∃) objects (yet not ...
